Everton 0-2 Manchester United: Cavani magic breaks Goodison hearts

Edinson Cavani fired Manchester United into the semi-finals of the EFL Cup as his superb late goal inspired a 2-0 win over Everton

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer s side have been imperious on the road this season and headed to Goodison Park having won all eight of their domestic away games by scoring at least three times on each occasion.

They peppered the Everton goal during the first half but had nothing to show for their efforts before the game became a more physical and fractious affair after the interval.

One such occasion saw Cavani grab at Yerry Mina s throat but the former Paris Saint-Germain star remained on the field to arrow a wonderful left-footed strike into the bottom left corner from 25 yards, with Anthony Martial making sure as Everton left themselves expos…

West Brom and Brighton eye Andre Ayew

It has been reported that Swansea manager Steve Cooper is not sure if the 30-year-old who can play as a winger or as upfront will be at the club.

Ayew is in his second spell at Swansea at the moment, having returned to the Welsh club in 2018 after a disappointing spell at West Ham United. The Ghana international spent the 2018-29 campaign on loan at Fenerbahce in Turkey.

According to Ayew has scored one goal and provided one assist in four Championship matches for Swansea so far this season. During the 2019-20 campaign, the forward made 45 starts and one substitute appearance…

Zenit 3-3 Chelsea: Blues forced to settle for second place

Chelsea were forced to settle for second place in Group H after an injury-time equaliser from Magomed Ozdoev clinched a 3-3 draw for Zenit in the Champions League.

Two goals from Timo Werner and another from Romelu Lukaku were not enough to secure the victory for the Blues, with Claudinho, Sardar Azmoun and Ozdoev all scoring for Zenit in Russia, and the Blues will now not be seeded in Monday s draw for the last 16 after finishing below Juventus, who beat Malmo in Turin.

The momentum of the game swung back and forth several times, with Chelsea s Kepa Arrizabalaga kept particularly busy.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel was missing a number of midfielders, including Jorginho, N Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic, and started Ross Barkley and Reece James in the middle…

Sahin backs Rodgers to emulate Klopp

Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin believes Brendan Rodgers can emulate Jurgen Klopp and bring silverware back to Anfield.

The on-loan Real Madrid midfielder witnessed the transformation Dortmund boss Klopp masterminded following his arrival in 2008, and has drawn parallels with his new boss on Merseyside.

Klopp, 45, arrived at Dortmund following a seven-year stint with Mainz 05, replacing Thomas Doll after BVB finished 13th in Bundesliga.

Klopp clinched the DFB Super Cup and guided Dortmund to a sixth place finish in his first season, before winning successive titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

Dortmund also notched a record-breaking 81 points in the league last year, before beating Bayern Munich 5-2 in the DFB Pokal as the club won their first ever domestic …

´Everything that could go wrong, did´ – McGinn reflects on Olympiacos defeat

Aston Villa captain, John McGinn said that “everything that could have gone wrong, did” after their Europa Conference League semi-final first-leg defeat to Olympiacos on Thursday.

Ayoub El Kaabi scored a hat-trick for Olympiacos, netting twice in the first half, though Villa fought back through Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby.

El Kaabi converted a spot-kick before a deflected Santiago Hezze strike put the visitors back in control.

Douglas Luiz also missed a late penalty, leaving Villa with a two-goal deficit to overturn in the second leg next Thursday.

Asked what he felt went wrong for the Villans, McGinn, speaking to TNT Sports, said: Not the game we wanted. We wanted a lot more control. We started the game well.

Keep the faith, Villans.

Martinez wary of Diame threat

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez believes midfielder Mohammed Diame will be a threat to his team when West Ham visit the DW Stadium.

But Martinez has backed his players to concentrate on their own performance when the clubs meet in the Premier League on Saturday.

Diame left Wigan in the summer to join newly promoted West Ham, with Sam Allardyce overseeing a major revamp of the east London side s squad.

The 25-year-old has impressed since joining the Hammers, a factor that hasn t gone unnoticed by Martinez who plucked him from Spanish Second Division obscurity in 2009.

You look at West Ham, and you have to say that their recruitment over the summer was really powerful and of the highest quality, he said.

You re talking about players like Andy Carr…

Stoke linked with Baptiste swoop

Stoke City have been reportedly monitoring the progress of Blackpool s Alex Baptiste ahead of a possible transfer bid in January.

Tony Pulis s Stoke went down 4-0 at home against Chelsea on Saturday, but had previously only conceded seven goals at the Britannia Stadium all season.

The prospect of signing Baptiste presents a good opportunity to bring in one of the best defenders outside the Premier League at good value.

Baptiste will be a free agent at the end of the season and as of December had not begun talks about a new deal at Bloomfield Road.

Baptiste was picked up for 5,000 pounds from Mansfield Town in 2008 and has become indispensable to the club after making more than 150 appearances since then.

Meanwhile, Blackpool are reportedly close…

Iniesta sees Verratti as his successor – Matuidi

Andres Iniesta sees Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti as his ideal replacement at Barcelona, according to Blaise Matuidi.

Verratti put in a sublime performance in PSG s 4-0 Champions League win over Barcelona at the Parc des Princes last week and Matuidi has claimed Iniesta was thoroughly impressed with the Italy international during the game.

When Verratti was down on the ground with an injury, I told Iniesta that Marco was his successor and he replied that he thought the same, Matuidi told France Bleu.

Iniesta is an extraordinary player. He is getting a bit older now, but the things he does are amazing.

He is just coming back from an injury and he will return to top form for the return.

We are fortunate to have his suc…

Real back in for De Gea

Real Madrid are readying a fresh bid for Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, .

The Spain international was strongly linked with a switch to the Bernabeu in the summer, though the move never materialised with the shot-stopper eventually signing a new four-year deal at Old Trafford.

Now, despite previously saying that they will not return for the twenty-five-year-old, the La Liga giants are considering a new offer for the end of the season.

De Gea moved to Manchester in the summer of 2011 and is closing in on two hundred appearances in all competitions for the club while internationally he has been capped seven times for his country.

Prior to his arrival in England he spent two years in Atletico Madrid’s first team and he could now be set to r…
